Phantasm

Phantasm is a great science fiction and horror film. While some of the special effects and plot devices are some what cheesy, it just adds to the overall atmosphere of the film. It is easy to see how Phantasm gained cult status from the iconic and menacing stare of Ken Jones. It makes the film for me and it deserves to be watched multiple times. Although I did criticized some of the special effects there were others that did blow me away and how well they were executed. As a…

La Cabina

La Cabina is one of the best short films I’ve seen and honestly it’s one of the best films I’ve seen period. What makes the movie great is the plot the reason for this is how bizarre and abstract the idea is. The interesting part is the transitions from public humiliation to the horror part of the film. It starts with almost a prank film where there are several funny/sad interactions with humanity and feels like a quite interesting commentary of the human race. Next is the bread and butter…

12 Monkeys

This Terry Gilliam classic about a rather disturbing dystopian future is an unique film. At first it took quite awhile to get into the meat of the film. While the plot is paced and written well, the beginning does leave the viewer a little lost as the atmosphere and background is built. However once the film gets to the bread and butter the acting really shines. Both Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt create great chemistry which will captive the viewer. The time travel plot does have holes in it, but…

The Imitation Game

I was honestly excited to watch The Imitation Game. However even though this movie is great and well done I just couldn’t love it. While the acting was incredible there was too much filler to make the movie feel amazing and something I wanted to watch multiple times. There were several awkward scenes in the film which makes it hard to watch. The Imitation Game felt like a bad version of Rashomon. The story was told out of order and while that can be done it didn’t feel as the same impact…

Stargate

Stargate is a giant in the science fiction world and lead to several spin off shows on TV. Is the praise the film receives deserved? I think the answer is yes.  The acting is great for the most part. The plot is great and at times feels like a UFO theorist dream, but that is what makes it amazing is out outlandish and over the top it is. The most surprising factor to me was the special effects I was expecting poor animation and instead was greeted by a visually…

The Great Hypnotist

The Great Hypnotist is truly a trip to watch. From start to end the films plot really shines and makes the film worth watching. The depth of character development is remarkable and helps pull the viewer into the story. While it is great to have an amazing plot the special effects helped bridge the line between reality and the characters memory creating a dream like state for the full film. The only draw back of the film is what holds the plot together and that is the biggest twist of…

Red Dragon

The first film in the Hannibal Lector series takes the viewer on an amazing thrill ride full of twists and turns. The movie has a brilliant plot and makes Red Dragon feel like a really intellectual and slow paced nightmare which keeps the viewer at the edge of their seat. The acting of both Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton are incredible. They bring the incredible depth to the characters and enhance the watching experience. The film has so many little things going on in it that it is worth watching…

Way Of The Dragon

Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris star in this kung-fu gem. Honestly just watching Chuck Norris fight Bruce Lee is the best part of the film. The rest of the film really felt like filler. While it was partially comical most of it was boring or lackluster. The only reason I kept watching the film was to see the aforementioned fight. If you are looking for a film that is good in the background and doesn’t require dedicated focus Way of the Dragon is a good film for it. Bottom Line…

Circle

Circle is a film where the entire plot takes place in one space much like Devil. The plot is drawn out and the movie is pretty painful to sit through. The dialogue is lackluster and there is several scenes that drag during the film. The concept seems good like Saw but there is little that redeems this film. It felt like the plot could be condensed into a half hour short film and it might be bearable because the plot twist isn’t worth sitting through the whole film. I would…

Most Likely To Die

Most Likely To Die felt like a different version of Scream. There were some unique aspects to the film, but it did feel like it was the stereotypical plot with just a different cast. It was hard to care about any character in the film and it was the way the characters were developed. The acting didn’t help for most of the characters. The cinematography was decent but it wasn’t breathtaking. If you haven’t seen Scream I would definitely watch that one over this one. Bottom Line (Warning Contains Spoilers)…
